Hey, yall! On behalf of the TJHSST Alumni Association, Just a quick reminder:
We look forward to seeing you on May 24 from 5-7pm in the TJHSST auditorium and gymnasium, followed by an informal reception at the school to catch up with old friends. We have a wide array of speakers, performances, and video to reflect on great memories. We also plan to unveil the future transformation of our building with renovation drawings.
Due to the anticipated high attendance, we are preparing two separate locations where every speaker and performer will be on stage in both locations, separated by a 10 minute delay. Tickets are no longer needed since we have increased our audience capacity. Seating will be first come, first serve. Please begin arriving on campus as early as 4:15 because parking space is limited and street parking may be necessary for those arriving close to 5pm.
We and the school look forward to welcoming you to this celebration!

So, did the Phelps cult show up Monday morning (and if so, are there any photos/videos, and how much did the Phelps-a-Thon pledge drive make), or did they give us a pass?
Thomas Jefferson High School Phelps-A-Thon
Fred Phelps’ clan is coming to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria! The “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church is planning to picket the school with their hateful anti-gay message.
When the Phelps group comes to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology to protest, they will actually be raising money for LGBT equality and understanding at the school! We are hosting a Phelps-A-Thon to counter Fred Phelps’ hateful message. For every minute the “God Hates Fags” clan is protesting, we will be collecting donations to benefit the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Gay/Straight Alliance.
I'm not sure if news about this has already gone around at TJ, but apparently Fred Phelps and his pack of crazy people
are planning to picket outside the school on March 22. This is the group that got famous by picketing at Matthew Shepard's
funeral, if anyone has read or seen the Laramie Project
. They also like to picket at the funerals of US service members who die in Iraq, because the Iraq war is apparently God's way of punishing the US for not killing gay people, so it's wrong to mourn those who die in it. Basically, if you pick a group made up of people who are not them, chances are they will drive across the country to spew their hatred at it.
I don't know why they've chosen TJ as the site of one of their protests, and the "explanation
" at their website is about as coherent as you would expect it to be, but I figured people might want a heads up. I'm overseas so I can't be involved in anything, but people have had some pretty good success
with dadaist counter-protests, if anyone is interested in putting something like that together. You'd have to have a thick skin, though.
Hello everyone! I figured I'd post this for the benefit of alums like myself who are not in the TJ loop anymore
Sad news. Because of budget cuts Arlington is considering cutting support for TJ and requiring the students from Arlington to return to their base schools in the middle of their TJHSST experience.
The good news is that APS is allowing everyone (regardless of APS affinity) to vote on various budget cuts and provide feedback. It closes at the end of the week.
I wouldn't know where I would be or what I would do without TJ and the awesome Arlington (and Non-Arlington) kids who attended. Lets give other Arlington kids the same chance!
All the best!

But at least they're up-front about it, unlike certain media outlets (that might or might not rhyme with Smwashington Pfhofst):
A summary, link to an excerpt, and honestly a pretty terrible comments thread here
Though I didn't know that I went to school with Thao Nguyen (of Thao and the Get Down Stay Down)! I knew she was from NoVa but not that she was TJ '02. So this article enriched my life in that one specific way, if nothing else.Special Bonus
: While you're at their website, check out their hysterical and alarmist screed against Adderall
from 2006, which manages to conflate oral use with insufflation and then suggests that taking low-dose pharmaceutical-industry amphetamine is basically
the same thing as dropping crystal meth you picked up on a street corner. Sloppy, sloppy journalism.
This community: so quiet lately! Sniff. I miss the good old days when LiveJournal was the cool place to hang.
Heard from an anonymous Twitter source:
All TJ courses are now out of 4.5 and AP courses are out of 5.0. Also, cutoff for A reduced from 94 to 93, and B+ from 90 to 87.
Is this true? They know that college admissions folks can both read and do math, right? They'll just deflate them. Regardless of whether the kids these days are JUST TOO CODDLED, what is this good
yours in grumpy crufty alumni-hood,
How many of you guys are not in high school anymore, but still list TJ in your resume?
